Biotechnology and Plant Breeding Department

In 1995, the School of Agriculture at the Ferdowsi University of Mashhad became the first school in Iran which offered a degree in Biotechnology. In designing this new area of research several factors such as conserving the environment by limiting the use of energy, land and water, preserving genetic diversity, and decreasing the use of chemical pesticides and fertilizers were taken into consideration. The Biotechnology and Plant Breeding Department trains highly-professional graduates both at the Master’s and Doctoral levels. The department also aims at introducing interdisciplinary branches of science according to the academic environment and job demands in Iran and around the world.

The aim of the Master’s program in the Department of Biotechnology and Plant Breeding is to educate specialists in Plant Breeding and Biotechnology, to employ new techniques in Molecular Breeding such as Genetic Engineering, and also to enhance students’ plant breeding skills by preparing them to participate in research projects in labs, greenhouses, or fields. Students in the Master’s program can concentrate on Agricultural Biology or Plant Breeding.

The Ph.D. Program in Biotechnology and Plant Breeding is a coordinated set of research and scientific activities aimed at educating specialists in different aspects of Biotechnology such as Genomics, Proteomics, Metabolomics, Genetic Engineering, etc., which are applicable in agriculture. Ph.D. candidates should attend advanced courses in Molecular Genetics and Biotechnology. The areas of specialization of the Ph.D. Program is Agricultural Biotechnology. More
