Department of Materials And Metallurgical Engineering

Metallurgical Engineering provides the opportunity for the study, design, implementation, and improvement of processes regarding the transformation of mineral resources and metals into useful products.  A metallurgical engineers’ job is to fulfill the mineral and metal product needs of the society. This should be done while they do their best to do their job in a nature-friendly approach by which they minimize waste, maximize energy efficiency, and facilitate recycling.

The Department of Materials Science & Metallurgy has a large and vigorous research faculty, with about 100 research fellows, postdoctoral scientists and visiting scientists, and more than 140 research students studying for the PhD degree. The Department of Materials Science & Metallurgy has a leading role in research and teaching regarding materials science. With an academic staff of over 30, including Research Fellows, the Department's research covers all major areas of the subject, and this breadth is reflected in the scope of our four-year undergraduate course.

The emphasis in undergraduate teaching, which was established in 1993, is on the principles applicable to the whole range of engineering materials such as metals, composites, ceramics, polymers, and solid state device materials. The lecture courses are presented along with laboratory experiments, applied projects, practical classes and supervisions. We try to maintain contact with the industry. After finishing 4 years of studies undergraduate students are prepared to work in the industry or run their own jobs.

Students were first admitted in the Masters’ degree at the Department of Material Science and Metallurgy in 2003. The aim of this program is to educate students advanced subjects in Metallurgy. Students in this program can study in one of the following majors (educational areas of specializations): Materials Section; Metal Corrosion and Protection, Metal Extraction.

In the doctoral program which was established in 2008, candidates study specialized subjects on Materials and Metallurgy.
